SHOHIN PROGRAM LIST

Note: All programs are available in-person or via Zoom presented by Mike Lane. Program fee is $350.

1. Introduction to Shohin - 

Exploring the unique culture of shohin bonsai, this course gives insight into the history, growing methods, aesthetic conventions, shohin containers, display, and other elements popular to the shohin bonsai subculture. 

2. Health, Development, and Refinement -

 Growing good bonsai requires a plan. This course highlights how material is approached here in the garden, to ensure fast, efficient, and predictable results time and time again. 

3. Shohin Display 101 -

The world of shohin display can at times appear daunting and a bit intimidating. In this course we breakdown the trees, containers,  and stands, as well as the conventional ways of arranging these elements. 

4. Delicate and Captivating Mame Bonsai -

Similar to Shohin, Mame are among the very smallest of bonsai. Often no bigger than a thimble, Mame bonsai require a careful and specific approach to growing and care. This program offers that insight as well as looking at the subtle and nuanced micro culture practiced by Mame growers. 

5. Exploring Shohin Container Culture -

Famous for their elaborate shapes, vibrant and experimental glazes, and at times the use of techniques that would otherwise be cost prohibitive on larger pots. Shohin containers offer unique compositional opportunities not found in larger bonsai culture. Here we dive into the arts most influential potters, the difference between masculine and feminine qualities, and finally tips on selecting the appropriate container for your shohin bonsai. 

6. Clip and Grow Bonsai: A system of proportions, wound care, and longevity

This course explores growing bonsai with or without wiring techniques, with focus on building bonsai with nothing more than a pair of shears. Perfect for seedlings and cuttings, the techniques found in this program are also great for learning proper wound healing, proportion building, and ramification theory that is ideal for larger trees as well. 

7. Grafting: Simple, Efficient Methods for Grafting Bonsai

In this program we take a look at the four fundamental grafts used in bonsai cultivation. This course will teach you what graft to use, when to use it, and the proper before and after care needed to ensure the success of the grafts. These techniques are perfect for those wanting to convert material from one variety to another, or those seeking to either add or replace key branches into the design.  

8. Shohin Refinement: A Never Ending Quest for Perfection

Here we look at what refinement means, when and how to begin refinement, and how to maintain bonsai that have been in refinement for many years. 

9. Cultivation and Design with Kitsune Bonsai

This summary course revisits the concepts discussed in the prior programs, however takes a more detailed look into the propagation, cultivation, and care techniques used in the garden at Kitsune Bonsai, as well as the soils, fertilizers, and pesticides used in the garden.
