Peashrubs are a hardy, touch and resilient plant with a shrubby, informal habit, multistemmed with forms varying
from upright to weeping. They bloom in spring with pealike yellow blossoms. Foliage is medium green, pinnate
leaves. It will form 1 to 2 inch green pods that turn deep brown later in the season, containing three to five seeds.
Resistant to disease, but very susceptible to insects.

Hardiness: Zone 3 to zone 4 in landscape. Winter protection.

Light: Full sun. Peashrubs suffer in shade.

Soil: Slightly alkaline to neutral soil, they do not tolerate acidic soil at all. Higher in inorganic than organic matter,
very free draining, peashrubs grow naturally in dryland, coarse soiled locations.

Watering: Very drought tolerant in the landscape, water thoroughly but allow to almost dry out before watering
again. Do not let dry out completely, but they do not tolerate constantly wet roots.

Fertilizer: Low nitrogen, once every three weeks. Peashrubs are natural nitrogen fixers.

Pests and Diseases: Leaf hoppers, spider mites. Subject to leaf spot and defoliation in humid areas.

Repotting: Once every one to three years. Do not do heavy root pruning.

Pruning and Styling: Reduce new growth to one or two leaves in spring. Deadhead flowers, unless seed pods are
desired, to conserve energy for the tree.

Propagation: Softwood cuttings, 2-4 weeks after blooming, 4-6 inches long. Seeds: In spring, place seeds from
previous year in hot water, just hot enough for you to put your hand in. Let soak as water cools over a period of no
less than 24 hours. Plant any seeds that begin to swell in a moist mixture of peat and perlite. No period of chill is
needed. Germinate best if exposed to light, and temperatures around 70 F. Seeds generally germinate within three
weeks.

Styles and Forms: clump, multitrunk, semi cascade, cascade
